Become a Good Observer

We must never allow a day to pass without finding the answers to a list of important questions such as: What is going on in our industry? What new challenges are currently facing our government? Our community? Our neighborhood? What are the new breakthroughs, the new opportunities, the new tools and techniques that have recently come to light? Who are the new personalities influencing world and local opinion?

We must become good observers and astute evaluators of all that is going on around us. All events affect us, and what affects us leaves an imprint on what we will one day be and how we will one day live.

One of the major reasons why people are not doing well is because they keep trying to get through the day. A more worthy challenge is to try to get from the day. We must become sensitive enough to observe and ponder what is happening around us. Be alert. Be awake. Let life and all of its subtle messages touch us. Often, the most extraordinary opportunities are hidden among the seemingly insignificant events of life. If we do not pay attention to these events, we can easily miss the opportunities.

So be a good observer of both life and the world around you.

Do You Have a Fat Head?

North America has a serious obesity problem (have you noticed?)

Two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight, and a full third are deemed medically obese (ouch!)

What caused this?

Some say it is because our food system has become industrialized, mass-producing an overload of cheap and fatty foods constantly at our fingertips.

Nah, while it doesn’t help, that is not why people get fat.

Look, the food doesn’t fly into people’s mouths unassisted. People have to choose to pick it up and stick it into their face. They could say no thank you and walk on by, as many do—you know, those insufferable lean and fit people (damn them!).

There is another obesity problem taking place here in North America and elsewhere.

This one is less visible but may be even more toxic and deadly to one’s life and potential.

We live in an era of ever-increasing information overload. News, radio, podcasts, blogs, online commentary, social interaction, TV shows and more are coming at us from every direction and every device, all day, every day.

Most of it is low-nutrient junk information, and we’re consuming it in huge quantities.

Physical obesity is not caused by the overload of available food; it is caused by the overconsumption of low-quality food.

The same is true for mental obesity.

It is not the overload of available information; it is the overconsumption of low-quality information. And mental obesity has consequences just as dire—hypertension, decision paralysis, loss of concentration, and diminished creativity and learning.

The solution to a fat head is the same as for a fat body:
You need to go on a diet, an information diet.

Avoid all high-calorie, low-nutrient information such as sensational television, useless celebrity trivia and other mind-numbing online commentary. Just because it’s around you doesn’t mean you need to consume it.

Yes, you will be tempted to indulge yourself at every turn, but trust me, if you can abstain for a prolonged period, you’ll lose your taste for it altogether.

Then devour several servings of head-healthy, nutrient-rich information every day. Reading the current issue of SUCCESS magazine and listening to the enclosed CD is a great start!

Eventually you’ll build your mind into a specimen that will be the envy of all your friends and the scourge of all your competitors.

Who knows? You might even find your lean, super-fit, sexy head on the cover of SUCCESS magazine one day as a result!

Keeping a Journal - One of the Three Treasures to Leave Behind

If you're serious about becoming a wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured and unique individual, keep a journal. Don't trust your memory. When you listen to something valuable, write it down. When you come across something important, write it down.

I used to take notes on pieces of paper and torn-off corners and backs of old envelopes. I wrote ideas on restaurant placemats. On long sheets, narrow sheets and little sheets and pieces of paper thrown in a drawer. Then I found out that the best way to organize those ideas is to keep a journal. I've been keeping these journals since the age of 25. The discipline makes up a valuable part of my learning, and the journals are a valuable part of my library.

I am a buyer of blank books. Kids find it interesting that I would buy a blank book. They say, "Twenty-six dollars for a blank book! Why would you pay that?" The reason I pay 26 dollars is to challenge myself to find something worth 26 dollars to put in there. All my journals are private, but if you ever got a hold of one of them, you wouldn't have to look very far to discover it is worth more than 26 dollars.

I must admit, if you got a glimpse of my journals, you'd have to say that I am a serious student. I'm not just committed to my craft; I'm committed to life, committed to learning new concepts and skills. I want to see what I can do with seed, soil, sunshine and rain to turn them into the building blocks of a productive life.

Keeping a journal is so important. I call it one of the three treasures to leave behind for the next generation. In fact, future generations will find these three treasures far more valuable than your furniture.

The first treasure is your pictures. Take a lot of pictures. Don't be lazy in capturing the event. How long does it take to capture the event? A fraction of a second. How long does it take to miss the event? A fraction of a second. So don't miss the pictures. When you're gone, they'll keep the memories alive.

The second treasure is your library. This is the library that taught you, that instructed you, that helped you defend your ideals. It helped you develop a philosophy. It helped you become wealthy, powerful, healthy, sophisticated and unique. It may have helped you conquer some disease. It may have helped you conquer poverty. It may have caused you to walk away from the ghetto. Your library-the books that instructed you, fed your mind and fed your soul-is one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind.

The third treasure is your journals: the ideas that you picked up, the information that you meticulously gathered. But of the three, journal writing is one of the greatest indications that you're a serious student. Taking pictures, that is pretty easy. Buying a book at a bookstore, that's pretty easy. It is a little more challenging to be a student of your own life, your own future, your own destiny. Take the time to keep notes and to keep a journal. You'll be so glad you did. What a treasure to leave behind when you go. What a treasure to enjoy today!

The Law of Expectations

I've found that whatever you expect, with confidence, becomes your own self-fulfilling prophecy.

When you confidently expect good things to happen, good things usually happen to you. If you expect something negative to happen, you are usually not disappointed.

Your expectations have an inordinate effect on the people around you as well. What you expect from people and situations determines your attitude toward them more than any other factor, and people reflect your attitude right back at you, like a mirror, whether positive or negative.

Dr. Robert Rosenthal of Harvard conducted dozens of controlled experiments over the years to test the power of the expectations of teachers on student performance. In his landmark book, “Pygmalion in the Classroom,” he tells of case after case where teachers were told that a student, or sometimes a whole class, was extremely bright and was predicted to make a quantum leap in academic performance in the coming year.

Even though the students were chosen from the school population at large, as long as the teacher believed that the student or students were exceptional, and the teacher expected the student to do well, the students performed vastly better than other students in the same or similar classes, and vastly better than could have been predicted by previous grades or behavior.

In your own personal life, your expectations of your staff, your boss, your customers and even of your own future tend to come true. Your expectations exert a powerful influence on people and events, for good or for ill, so be careful!
